Weekbladpers brought seven publications to the iPad in just a couple of weeks, making almost all of its titles available on the tablet.

As one of the first publishers worldwide to do this, the team also took advantage of the Web-based conversion service "pdftotablet" for a number of its titles.

ZAANDAM, The Netherlands (January 31, 2011) – WoodWing Software, an innovation leader in the fields of cross-media publishing solutions and tablet publishing, announced today that the Dutch publisher Weekbladpers made seven of its publications available on the iPad using WoodWing´s Digital Magazine Tools. The range of publications includes Vrij Nederland, Men´s Health, Opzij, J/M voor Ouders, Runner´s World, Hollands Diep, and Yoga Magazine. Psychologie Magazine and Happinez will become available on the iPad this spring.

The Dutch news weekly Vrij Nederland, published since 1940, is specifically designed for the iPad. The other publications are available on the device initially as PDF-based iPad editions created with the online conversion service "pdftotablet" (www.pdftotablet.com), provided by The Saints, one of WoodWing’s technology partners. In combination with a free add-on for WoodWing´s iPad Reader App, the service enables publishers to quickly convert existing PDF files of their publications into digital magazines, which can then be distributed using WoodWing´s Reader App. The PDF-based iPad publications currently support text and image zooming, and will soon be enhanced with additional features.

“Our solution for the conversion of PDFs into digital magazines integrates smoothly with WoodWing´s tablet-publishing solution and existing workflows,” said Andre Valkenburg, Managing Director of The Saints. “What we like specifically is the flexibility offered by WoodWing to customize the apps, create connections to subscription systems, and more. We are pleased that we were able to support Weekbladpers with our know-how and our service to bring such a large number of publications to the iPad at one time.”

Karin van Gilst, Director at Weekbladpers, said, “The iPad combines the best of two worlds: the quality content of our magazines and the reader-attractive features of the iPad as a new and innovative media platform.“

Combination of native and PDF-based iPad pages
“The conversion of existing PDF files into digital magazines is a very quick and efficient way to bring printed publications to the iPad,” said Jeroen Sonnemans, Managing Director of WoodWing Europe. “Our tablet-publishing solution, in combination with the conversion solution developed by The Saints, enables publishers to combine native iPad pages created with our Digital Magazine Tools with PDF pages of existing printed publications.”

The apps were created by The Saints with the support of Graphit, a Gold Authorized Solution Partner of WoodWing in The Netherlands. Graphit has also optimized the PDF creation process at Weekbladpers and executed the implementation and training of the WoodWing tablet publishing solution. Sybrand Vochteloo, Managing Director of Graphit, said, “This has been a project exploring the new boundaries of publishing and an example of a creative cooperation between a lot of different people and partners, with an impressive result that we are proud of.”
