In 2007, the leading Russian daily Rossiyskaya Gazeta launched a monthly supplement about modern Russia in three of the world’s leading newspapers. Today, Russia Beyond the Headlines is circulated in 16 countries and is an internationally recognized source of political, business, and cultural news and analysis. To celebrate its fifth anniversary, the publication brought its international partners together in Moscow for a conference on media best practices from May 23-25.

The supplement currently appears in 19 of the world’s leading newspapers, including the New York Times and the Washington Post (United States), the Daily Telegraph (UK), Folha de São Paulo (Brazil), La Nacion (Argentina), Süddeutsche Zeitung (Germany), the Economic Times (India) and the South China Morning Post (Hong Kong).

Efficient creation through a globally distributed editorial workflow system based on WoodWing Enterprise
The publication is produced using a globally distributed workflow system based on WoodWing Enterprise and Content Station. The central editorial office and the creative team – around 70 users – are based in Moscow. Another 40 editors and writers – working remotely from the United States, Latin America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region – access WoodWing Enterprise through Adobe InCopy, which enables them to collaborate with the team in Moscow in real time.

Each supplement is adjusted for the local market, language, print dimensions, pagination and newspaper style. All stories are regionalized and localized for each particular market. Up to 30 percent of the content appearing in each supplement is local.

Over the last five years, we've relied on WoodWing to coordinate our 19 supplements in 11 languages published around the world,” said Eugene Abov, publisher of Russia Beyond The Headlines. “Our editorial team is actually spread around the globe. The software's versatility has been critical to facilitating the remote editing processes aimed at content localization for different markets. We look forward to further engaging and expanding upon our work with WoodWing as we expand our supplements to more countries and continue the newsroom conversion process.

Over the next two years, Russia Beyond the Headlines plans to expand into Mexico, South Africa, Poland, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore and Australia, bringing the monthly circulation to more than 10 million copies.

The team is supported by NBZ Computers in Moscow, WoodWing´s Gold Authorized Solution Partner in the Russian Federation. “With the continuous development of the project, we have seen over and over again that WoodWing makes the right decisions in terms of functionality and technology in a timely manner,” said Aleksey Popov, general manager at NBZ. “The Enterprise platform enables us to fulfill our customers’ needs now and in the future.

We congratulate Russia Beyond The Headlines on its fifth anniversary and are very pleased that we are able to contribute with our solutions and technologies to this tremendous success,” said Manfred Witteman, who is responsible for WoodWing sales in Eastern Europe. “The publication is a perfect showcase of the power and flexibility WoodWing Enterprise offers to support even the most demanding workflows.
