Three-tier architecture

Most users won’t be aware that Enterprise uses a 3-tier architecture to maximize scalability and modularity. They see only the first tier, in the form of a Client Application. They simply use Adobe InCopy or InDesign, Photoshop or Illustrator, Microsoft Word or Excel, or the WoodWing Web Editor, to do their job. Behind the scenes, their application communicates with the second tier using the SOAP protocol, which guarantees outstanding performance, even with remote Web usage or on high-latency networks.

Tier two, our customizable Application Server, is the core of the system taking care of everything. It contains the business logic, handles all administration tasks, controls workflow, and separates the first tier from the third tier, managing and maximizing security.

Tier three, finally, is the Database and Storage layer, holding all content: images, text, audio, video and more. It stores its content natively in media-neutral XML that can easily be published on paper, the Web and other media. You can use your preferred database, as Enterprise works with industry standards like MySQL, Oracle and MS-SQL Server.

Open platform, open source, open policy

WoodWing believes in openness. New technologies are being developed faster than ever. To use them tomorrow, you should not depend on a single technology or supplier today. Use any operating system you like: Mac OS, Linux, Solaris or Microsoft Windows. Pick your client applications. Choose your database. Select a Web server like Apache or MS-IIS. Customize the business logic. Scalability is the keyword.

You even have access to the source code to maximize control, flexibility and opportunities for custom functionality. All this is possible due to the open architecture, open standard components, open source and XML foundation of the system.

You keep control

WoodWing’s publishing platform has been engineered from the ground up, utilizing the latest technologies offered by the Internet age, and packing a huge amount of functionality. Our proactive development approach features, on average, one main update every nine months, putting new possibilities at your disposal. Initial installation and configuration is extremely easy: the entire system can be up and running in just hours.

You have full control over your configuration. The system is available in more than ten major languages. You can set up your publication structure with your own terminology, editions, multiple workflows, custom meta data, detailed access rights, level of versions, audit trails, automatic routing, etc. On top of this, we offer a live overview of your publication which displays page previews, layout and article status information, along with deadline summaries and advanced reporting for management information.

System management is possible via a Web browser. Two levels are provided: IT staff maintains the overall system, and business managers manage their own publications.

Productivity is paramount

We offer a truly parallel workflow. Teams of writers, copy editors, art directors and photo editors can work simultaneously and securely on the same content. To increase productivity even further, we offer plug-ins to automate repetitive tasks, creating more time for quality and creativity.

Easy access to your content is essential for an efficient workflow. The powerful Inbox shows just those items the user has to work on. For flexible queries, WoodWing offers the unique 3D-Search™ – full-text search, meta data search and structure-based search. For an efficient collaboration, the user can use instant messaging, e-mail notifications, inline notes inside the text and sticky notes on the layout. In addition, live updating queries, automated actions, integrated reporting and the XML content offer even more time-saving benefits.

Tight integration with your existing software environment is only part of the story. We work with many technology partners and third parties, to offer compelling and complete solutions based on our central publishing platform. Many excellent systems, like planning, Web, archiving, wire feed and digital asset management systems, have been integrated with Enterprise, and the list is growing by the day.
