Success Story – ItalyPost
How ItalyPost built an entirely new, digital-first newspaper from the ground up with WoodWing's editorial system and an integrated publishing ecosystem.
Results
- Web-first single workflow ecosystem: a new editorial infrastructure connecting CMS, editorial system, layout, and digital distribution in one workflow.
- Streamlined production: a custom CMS-to-Studio integration automatically flags content ready for layout, reducing manual work and eliminating duplicate effort.
- Newsroom autonomy: a dedicated interface sends print-ready PDFs straight to the printer, without external dependencies.
- Subscriber-first strategy: a single subscription model shifted the focus from traffic to subscriber value, with digital content published ahead of print.

About the client
ItalyPost was founded to tell the story of the Italy that creates value every day – through its businesses, its regions, and its everyday work. Rather than chasing controversy or short-lived news, the newspaper set out to build solid, contextualized, independent economic journalism.
Behind ItalyPost is Post Media, a publisher with an already well-established history in books and other authoritative publications. From day one, that editorial foundation demanded a technology infrastructure to match an ambitious, future-facing vision.
The initial situation
Unlike most publishers taking on a WoodWing project, ItalyPost didn't have any legacy systems to migrate or adapt. It was starting completely from scratch. This gave the project a unique advantage: the entire editorial ecosystem could be designed around web-first publishing from the very first line of code, rather than forcing digital into a workflow originally built for print.
The newspaper's structure added complexity of its own: a daily main edition running alongside two weekly inserts, Indice della Settimana and Monitor, both of which required consistent pagination and efficient process management.
It needed a complete infrastructure that could integrate the CMS, editorial system, layout, and digital distribution into a single, connected workflow. Operational continuity, workflow control, and long-term sustainability were non-negotiable.
The goal
ItalyPost set out to launch a truly omnichannel newspaper, with digital at its core and print fully integrated into the publishing strategy. That meant:
- One editorial workflow feeds both print and digital, without duplicated effort.
- Full newsroom autonomy over print production and delivery.
- A subscription model rewarding early digital access.
- Real-time visibility into article progress for the whole team.
The solution
WoodWing Studio forms the backbone of ItalyPost's editorial ecosystem, implemented and customized by WoodWing partner GMDE, alongside a website, a digital page-flip viewer, and the Timone editorial dashboard.
At the heart of the solution is the editorial workflow: articles are created in the CMS, while a custom integration developed by GMDE enables seamless communication with WoodWing Studio. As soon as content is ready for layout, it is automatically made available to the editorial team. This eliminates duplicate work and ensures editors always work with a single, structured source of truth.
The editor-in-chief composes each edition through an intuitive web interface, while the graphics team finalizes the layout in WoodWing Studio with full creative control. Both teams work from the same content, allowing print and digital editions to be produced simultaneously and stay perfectly in sync.
GMDE also developed a dedicated interface that connects directly to WoodWing Studio, enabling the newsroom to send print-ready PDFs straight to the printing house – without relying on external production teams. Once finalized, the edition is automatically transferred to the VNP digital viewer, ensuring a seamless publishing workflow from print to digital.
The implementation
With no legacy systems to migrate, Post Media had the opportunity to design its editorial workflow from scratch around WoodWing Studio. Together with implementation partner GMDE, WoodWing mapped every step of the publishing process – from article creation and CMS integration to layout, print production, and digital publication. GMDE then developed the integrations that tied everything together into a single, automated workflow.
One of the project's key priorities was enabling the editor-in-chief and the graphics team to work in parallel without blocking each other. Content is transferred from the CMS to WoodWing Studio only when it's ready for layout, ensuring designers always work with finalized articles. A Timone dashboard integration provides the newsroom with real-time visibility into the status of every article.
The conclusion
Moving to a unified, digital-first workflow has fundamentally changed the way ItalyPost operates. Instead of exchanging PDFs by email, the entire editorial team now works from a single, shared editorial planning environment, with everyone working from the same up-to-date content.
The benefits extend well beyond editorial efficiency. By adopting a digital-first publishing model, ItalyPost shifted its focus from maximizing traffic to building long-term subscriber value. Publishing digital content ahead of the printed edition turned online access into an exclusive subscriber benefit, strengthening both engagement and the subscription's value.
ItalyPost demonstrates what's possible when an editorial platform is designed around digital from day one, with print becoming a natural extension of the same workflow rather than a separate production process.
