Channel-neutral content creation

If you have the future in mind and creating reusable content is important to your business, a channel-neutral workflow might be the best way to go.

Print-first publishing

Do you wish to create and publish your content to print first, and then publish to your digital channels at a later time? A print first then digital workflow supports and streamlines this way of working.

Print-only publishing

Do you create content only for your print publications? Use the great features of the WoodWing Studio print editor and our plugin for Adobe InDesign to achieve efficient editing and content creation with your team.

Channel-neutral content creation

This way of working incorporates content structure from the start. Reuse and republish across any of your brands, or on any platform, channel or device, at anytime.

Starting your content creation process in the WoodWing Studio editor, versions and variants can be easily made to stories, and content can be automatically placed onto a predefined print layout or republished on any online channel.

In this example, a story is created and then published in a print publication, as well as on a website and an app (or social channel).

A typical way of working is for members of your team to store content and assets in a dossier in WoodWing Studio. This content can be easily retrieved from WoodWing Assets, or from any other digital asset management system, and placed into the dossier.

The story is created in the WoodWing Studio digital editor and then pushed to the next member of the team for review. Once the story is reviewed and approved it can be automatically placed onto an Adobe InDesign layout, at the same time this creates a print variant of the story that is stored in your WoodWing Studio dossier.

Channel specific tweaks can be applied (such as copy-fitting) to this print variant of the story (using the print editor within Content Station) before being sent for final review. Once approved the story can be published in the print publication.

The story can also be used on your website. As the content is structured when it is created in the Digital editor, the individual components of your story automatically fall into the correct places when pushing to your WebCMS. For example, a heading falls into the heading space on your website and the image falls into the image space on your website, automatically taking on the styles assigned in your WebCMS.

Additionally, publishing styled content is possible from WoodWing Studio. Different ‘look and feel’ styles can be created in the WoodWing Studio digital editor for your different brands. With one click of the button, your story can have your branding styles applied (think colors, fonts, text and image sizes etc.), and then you can simply publish to your app (or social channel).

A great feature of WoodWing Studio is that custom digital channels can always be added at a later time. This ensures that your future publishing needs are always able to be met, with the addition of new or custom digital publishing channels.

Print-first publishing

If you typically create your print content first (for example by placing it on an Adobe InDesign layout), and then want to adjust, reuse and republish the same content on your digital channels at a later time, you can still achieve an automated and efficient content creation process with WoodWing Studio.

So what does a basic print first then digital publishing workflow look like? An example of this workflow begins in an InDesign layout, and your content will be typically reviewed before being published in your print publication. After reviewing there is also the option to, not only publish your print copy, but also use that same story (or content) on your digital channels.

How? The content and digital assets from your print layout in InDesign is structured into text and graphic frames. With the help of a WoodWing plugin, these text and graphic frames can all be automatically converted and placed into the Content Station digital editor. This creates a raw digital variant of the story.

In the digital editor some manual tweaking is usually required - like ordering the components or changing the styling - before reviewing and then publishing the content to one of your digital channels. Digital channels that you can instantly publish to include your WebCMS, apps or social channels like Facebook Instant Articles (IA). And you can also add your own custom digital channels at a later time.

Other examples of this way of working include starting out with writing your article in InCopy and then placing your text on the InDesign layout or using the print editor in Content Station to create your story

Print-only publishing

Streamlining the editorial process for your print publication can still take place using WoodWing Studio the same way it always has. The difference is now there are more added features for easier and smarter editorial production than ever before. Keep track of your issues, publications, and articles, while collaborating in real-time with internal and external contributors all in one system.

The beauty of WoodWing Studio is that it allows team members to work in parallel with each other. By having multiple people working on the same issue at the same time, editorial bottle-necks are reduced and the workflow is streamlined.

To create content for your print publication, there are many places where you can start. However one typical way of working is to begin with your team placing their content and assets (story ideas) into a dossier in WoodWing Studio. These assets can be easily retrieved from your DAM system - WoodWing Assets, where for example, your photographer has previously stored images.

At the same time a layout can be created in Adobe InDesign from one of your templates stored in WoodWing Studio. Working in InDesign you can simply drag and drop text and images onto the layout, tweaking the layout and text frames where necessary.

By routing to your Copy Editor, he/she automatically receives a notification in their WoodWing Studio inbox that a story is ready for review. In the WoodWing Studio print editor (or in Adobe InCopy) they can adjust elements such as the titles and body text, and even adjust images and the layout design. Changes are instantly displayed in the preview.

Once your Copy Editor is happy with the story he/she can change the status and route the story to the next person, for example the Managing Editor, for the final review before publishing.

Meanwhile, your Managing Editor can see how the entire issue is progressing by looking at the issue in the publication overview. For example, if they see that a status is set to green this means that this particular story is ready to publish. They can then make further edits if required and then publish the issue.

Digital-only publishing

Creating content and stories to solely publish on your digital channels? It’s never been easier for teams to collaborate, manage content and publish to many digital platforms, quickly and simply.

Digital-only publishing

If you are looking to speed up your story creation process and consistently engage your online audience with quality content, this way of working will appeal to you.

Teams work in the WoodWing Studio digital editor, fully focused on generating great content and stories, with peace of mind knowing that it is going to look amazing on any online platform or digital device once published.

This way of working allows teams to work collaboratively on their digital stories, publish to many different types of digital channels, at the same time eliminating mundane and time-consuming tasks.

Typically your team starts out by placing all of the ideas and digital assets for your story in a dossier. These might be articles, images and videos that you retrieve from your WoodWing Assets. In the WoodWing Studio digital editor you can create your story by adding many different components to your story (you can even create your own custom components) such as titles, subtitles, heros, authors, quotes, body text, images, social posts, or videos.

Editing capabilities in the digital editor, such as drag-and-drop of your digital assets stored in the dossier, quick image focal point fixes and real-time previews speed up the whole digital content creation process.

Once you are happy with your digital story, you can push to the next member of your team for review. A notification appears in his/her WoodWing Studio inbox, and once approved your digital content can be published to your chosen online platform or channel.

Digital channels that you can publish to might include your WebCMS, where you publish neutral content that automatically takes on the style of your branded website. Or your mobile app, where your brand’s look and feel is automatically applied in the WoodWing Studio digital editor before publishing. Apart from the predefined digital channels, you can choose to add your own custom digital channels for publishing to, or even share your great story with another brand.
