Any questions?
In the fast-paced world of publishing, companies must adapt quickly to the demands of digital transformation. DPG Media, one of the leading media organizations in Europe, recognized this challenge and adopted an advanced Digital Asset Management (DAM) system along with a modular content creation and publishing platform to modernize its content operations, improve efficiency, and maintain its competitive edge.
About the client
DPG Media is a media giant in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Denmark. It manages a vast array of newspapers (including some of the biggest Dutch newspapers), magazines, and digital platforms – more than 80 titles in total. With an ever-expanding portfolio, DPG produces an enormous volume of content daily, catering to millions of readers across print and digital media.
The challenge
As DPG Media’s content production expanded, its traditional content management systems struggled to keep up with the sheer volume of digital assets. The challenge of maintaining the quality and profitability of their print publications while increasing their digital presence at the same time put pressure on its existing systems, which proved to be unstable and unreliable to the point that daily printing processes were regularly jeopardized – with 1.2 million newspapers waiting for printing every day, the situation became difficult to manage.
Considering the difficulties, and adding the increasing shift to online media consumption, DPG Media needed a more efficient way to manage content creation for both print and digital. “We faced delays in managing and distributing content,” says Erik Louwes, Program Manager at DPG Media, in an interview with Press Gazette. “This inefficiency slowed down time-to-market for new stories and created inconsistencies across platforms. With content being stored in various silos, tracking and reusing assets became a bottleneck.”
The solution
To address these challenges, DPG Media implemented an advanced DAM solution (WoodWing Assets) in combination with a modular content creation and publishing solution (WoodWing Studio) equipped with an Adobe InDesign plugin that simplified DPG Media’s workflow and helped centralize and streamline content creation and distribution processes. On top of that, it allowed editors and designers to collaborate more easily and reuse content across channels. Louwes elaborates: “We needed a system that could keep up with the complexity of our operations.”
The combination of the DAM system and the content creation/ publishing solution provided DPG with a unified platform, enabling seamless organization, retrieval, and repurposing of assets and content.
The implementation
The implementation of the solutions was carried out in a phased approach, starting with critical departments, to minimize disruption. “We partnered closely with Qonqord, a WoodWing partner, to ensure the system met our specific needs,” Louwes explains. Training programs were introduced to familiarize staff with the new tools and functionalities, emphasizing collaboration across teams. The gradual rollout allowed the organization to identify pain points and adjust workflows without overwhelming our employees.
Results and benefits
The results were transformative for DPG Media. The new DAM system allowed for faster, more efficient content distribution across platforms, reducing production time significantly. “Our teams are now able to collaborate better and reuse content easily,” Louwes adds. The automation of repetitive tasks not only saved time but improved the quality of content by ensuring consistency across channels. This streamlined process also enhanced customer engagement by delivering timely and relevant content to audiences, keeping DPG ahead in the competitive media industry.
We are able to produce the newspaper more efficiently, with fewer people, and that’s very important for the future of our publishing house.
Erik Louwes – Program Manager, DPG Media
By modernizing its digital infrastructure, DPG Media set a new standard for operational efficiency in the media sector, positioning itself as a leader in digital transformation. The digitization of its services did, however, in no way compromise its printing activities. If anything, the new content creation and publishing platforms also boosted the efficiency of print workflows.
Since partnering with Qonqord and running their operations on WoodWing's solutions, DPG Media has streamlined its print process, enabling a stronger focus on digital growth through subscriptions and premium paywalls. Louwes highlights that their efficient print system now allows them to produce newspapers with less staff, which is critical for the publisher's future. This digital shift has been significant for DPG, with digital advertising revenue growing by a stunning 250% over five years, reaching €207 million in 2023.
